track + Field
description
The track and field unit is a lot of fun. Not only do the students learn about the running (track) events, but they also learn about various throwing and jumping events (field). Some of the events they learned about were relay races, discus, javelin, shot put, hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. Since most of the equipment normally used for these events can be dangerous without proper training, we used modified equipment to practice. For example, instead of using a full-sized javelin, we used a smaller, lighter version called the TurboJav. We also used pool rings and softballs to help us practice the shot put and discus. As the students quickly discovered, track and field events are some of the more difficult competitions. They all require a great deal of coordination, focus, and near perfect execution.
One of the wonderful aspects of this unit is its variety. It was obvious that some students loved the running events while others could not wait to start the throwing events. Before the unit started, the class split up into small groups to complete a scavenger hunt. I used the scavenger hunt to get the students thinking about which events fall into which category (track, field, combined) and to learn what some of the equipment looked like. Track and field is popular because it appeals to different populations. Those students who want to feel like part of a team can participate in the hurdles or relay events, not to mention that it is a team sport although there seems to be a large individual component to it. Also, those students who may want to focus a little more on their own performance can compete in events such as the sprints, throws, and jumps.
