create-a-game
The Create-a-Game unit is intended to allow the students to analyze the various aspects that come in to play when playing a game. These include, but are not limited to, number of participants, rules, boundaries, restrictions, and scoring. The students will have an opportunity to work together with their peers to create a game that the class can play. Students will have several classes to brainstorm and experiment and will be expected to show/explain their game.
Once all of the groups have explained their games, the class will attempt to play as many as possible. The students' creativity is really at play here. This kind of activity is especially important because young children need to understand how to organize their own activity rather than rely on adults to show them the way. There are times we want to play soccer, but don't have a soccer ball. What do we do? Sometimes we want to play baseball or softball and don't have bases. Could we use a hat or shirt? This kind of versatility permits more active play, which helps us all lead a healthier lifestyle.
