team building
description
This Team Building for the 6th grade is meant to build upon the skills they developed during their Juniors years. The challenges and activities of this unit force the students to be supportive, cooperative, and patient as they work towards accomplishing a common goal. The students have an opportunity to work with classmates they may not usually work with, further encouraging them to get along with everyone. We walk through some of the important concepts to solving a problem as well (ABCDE's of problem solving). Through this analysis the students learn how to dissect the various parts of a problem and solution. It helps guide them through the process of improving or modifying their ideas until they have achieved the desired result.
Another focus of the 6th grade throughout this unit is to compliment one another in an attempt to find ways to remain positive even in times of struggle. Throughout the unit, it is obvious which groups have difficulties with this. As a result, their groups often take longer to complete challenges and have to spend more time discussing how to get along. The important thing is that by the end of the unit all groups usually make tremendous progress in this area. The students work together and understand how to be more considerate of everyone's varying skill and experience levels.
The culminating activity at the end of this unit is a self-evaluation. The students answer questions to get them thinking about how well they worked together, if their teammates would want them on their team again, and if they did everything they could to have meaningfully contributed to the group's success.
