basketball
description
The Basketball unit teaches students about the fundamental skills involved in the game, but it also reviews the game tactics that were present in the lacrosse unit. Each lesson focuses on something different, ranging from setting screens, playing defense, dribbling, to passing and shooting. As always, the rules of the games were modified to promote equal opportunities among all participants. The rules encourage more passing and teamwork. This type of learning experience allows everyone to feel like an involved, meaningful contributor during the game. Once the students becoming proficient in each of the required skills, the class begins to play in games. Some of these games are small-sided in order to stress the team aspects of the game. Others are full court, regulation games. The students that have prior experience are asked to help referee and teach their peers while playing. It is an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skills and can provide the students with a sense of ownership. Each student completes a peer assessment for one of their classmates. This helps reinforce an understanding of the new material.
