throwing, catching + Dribbling
description
The purpose of this unit is to teach the students how to properly throw, catch, and dribble by providing them with experience in a variety of different activities. The students start off learning how to throw against a wall with a tennis ball. The basic principle the students learn is S-T-E-P (step, turn, elbow up, point). By following this principle, the students will be able to appropriately throw with more consistent accuracy and distance. After becoming proficient with this simple task, the students graduate to self-tossing and partner-tossing. This is when the students begin to learn about catching.
After the classes learn about dribbling with their feet and hands, they start to participate in station work. The stations are designed to allow the students to practice their newly learned skills in different environments. For example, the students practice throwing at different targets and dribbling around obstacles. This unit is an introduction to the fundamental skills needed in order to participate in larger games such as soccer, basketball, baseball, and football.
