Chasing, fleeing, dodging
description
The Chasing, Fleeing, Dodging unit focuses on evasive games. This means that the students will learn how to evade defenders while also learning how to pursue opposing players (just like if they were playing a game of football or soccer). These are concepts and skills that are required when trying to play defense or offensive in sports. In order to teach these skills, many variations of tag will be included. This unit builds off of our Spatial Awareness unit as the students must remember to travel around the space in a safe way. No only do they need to avoid the defense (or taggers), but they also need to avoid all the other players.
The students will also learn about awareness in game situations during this unit. Students must pay attention to their surroundings while chasing, fleeing, and dodging. Think about playing a game of football and being chased from behind by an opposing player. Of course, you want to try to run away from that single defender, but what about all of the other defenders? If you forget about them, chances are that you won't run as far as you thought. Playing evasion games allows for the students to practice fleeing from all defenders while staying focused on the entire surrounding environment. This game and player awareness will serve them well throughout the rest of the year, especially during the Game Skills unit.
