self defense
description
The Self Defense unit is an extension of the Karate units from the younger grades. The students will review the various hand strikes, kicks, and blocks previously learned, but they will also learn some new material. Students have a chance to practice the skills with partners using large, padded blockers, foam pool noodles, and punching bags. Each class consists of two parts: instruction and practice. The students will complete a warm-up led by the teacher before beginning to learn the new hand strikes/kicks/blocks for the day. Afterwards, the class is split up into multiple groups. Each group will spend a few minutes practicing using one of the implements listed above.
The second half of the unit is dedicated to learning about various scenarios in which one would need to defend his/her well-being. The students work in partners while following my instruction. This portion of the unit is a great experience for the class and allows them learn some important skills in the event they ever need to use them.
