Jump rope
description
Jumping rope is one of the most physically demanding activities that I know. After only a few minutes one can feel as if they had been exercising for a much longer period of time - that is a good thing. Jumping rope has some tremendous benefits including improved overall and cardiovascular fitness.
This unit focuses on individual skills as well as cooperative, creative skills needed to be a member of a small group. Each student is given a checklist of various jumps to be completed before moving on to the group project. This can be a challenging unit for many, especially if the students do not participate in regular vigorous physical activity. However, the main focus is to complete as much of the checklist as possible. Some of the hardest workers and most dedicated students are not the ones that fully complete the checklist, but are the ones who do whatever it is they can to improve. About midway through the unit, the students finish up their progress on the checklist and we split up into small groups consisting of 4-6 students. The group is given a rubric to help guide them through the creative process. On the final day of the unit, each group has an opportunity to perform their routine in front of the rest of the class. It is pretty remarkable to see the amazing work of all the students.
