Lacrosse
description
The Lacrosse unit is meant to introduce the students to the fundamental skills and game concepts often seen in the sport. The classes are organized so that the students have ample time to practice these skills before participating in small sided games. Over time, the students become much more comfortable throwing and catching with the lacrosse stick, which can result in better performance. As the skills develop, small games are introduced. This includes games focusing on maintaining possession as a team or even on trying to score in a goal. Ultimately, the objective of this unit is to be able to use all of these physical and game skills to play in games with, and against, their peers.
Maybe more important than the skills themselves, the students must demonstrate good sportspersonship and teamwork. It is vital to any team that they have a cohesive group that gets along and is willing to support one another. Each and every student should feel involved in the game play. A sport such as lacrosse offers students a chance to see how skill and experience levels vary. Some students have prior experience or quickly learn the new skills. I ask these students to be leaders in the class by providing their peers with advice on how to improve. It is inspiring to see those students to take pride in doing so.
